As recently as 1970, Oceanside was a small town of just 45,000 people; since that time, it has blossomed into one of the most populous cities in San Diego County. Today, Oceanside is home to about 150,542 people, and along with Carlsbad and Vista, makes up what is known as the “Tri-City Area.”
Oceanside attracts many tourists due to its close proximity to the beach and the most active military base in the nation, Camp Pendleton. In addition, Oceanside is an agricultural powerhouse, as its mild climate provides ideal growing conditions for crops such as avocadoes, oranges, flowers, and tomatoes. Oceanside is also a business-friendly environment, offering incentives for commercial and industrial construction, as well as one of the lowest property tax rates in the nation. It is no surprise then, that some of the most prominent biotech and medtech companies have made Oceanside their home.
Recently, a North County jury convicted 18-yr-old gang member Penifoti Taeotui of first-degree murder for the 2006 shooting of Oceanside Police Officer Dan Bessant. Taeotui is set to be sentenced in early 2009. Because Taeotui was 16 at the time of the shooting, prosecutors are forbidden from seeking the death penalty; he could, however, face a maximum sentence of life in prison without the chance for parole. The verdict marks a success for Deputy District Attorney Tom Manning, and may offer some relief for Bessant’s family and friends. Taeotui’s attorney maintains that his client is innocent.
