A two-hour drive west of Sacramento in Sonoma County lies the town of Windsor. It was so named after Windsor Castle by an English settler who said the oak trees in the area reminded him of the latter. Most of the first families who came to the area in the 1850s were of European descent.
Windsor was incorporated only in 1992 but it already had a century of history by that time. Lying close to the famous Napa Valley, Windsor was a grape-growing town, primarily for wine production. For much of the 20th century, it was just that, and the population only boomed in the 1980s with housing development. The town voted for an urban growth boundary to keep it from becoming too urbanized, effectively setting the limits of using agricultural land for urban development.
Windsor hosts a weekly Summer Nights on the Green and a Farmers’ Market geared towards family entertainment and shopping. There are 6 elementary schools and 2 high schools that serve the children of the town. The nearest tertiary education options are Empire College and Santa Rosa Junior College, both in Santa Rosa. Empire College School of Law offers law degrees. Other options for legal education nearby are the UC Davis School of Law, the Golden Gate University School of Law, and the UC Hastings School of Law.
Students or Windsor citizens who want to do some reading or research may go to the full-service Windsor Regional Library. It is open Mondays to Saturdays 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. At certain times of the year, it hosts a free legal clinic where participants are received on a first-come, first-served basis. You may also go to the Sonoma County Law Library in Santa Rosa for a more expanded selection. But if you don’t want to commute or have time to visit the library outside of work, you may consult the Legalmatch Online Law Library. We have over 10,000 articles on diverse legal issues and concerns for you to browse and read.
In November 2019, Sonoma County housing developers filed legal suits against the Windsor town’s ban on the use of natural gas in residences. Arguing against all-electric-powered homes, they cited unreliable electric energy sources and wildfires caused by faulty electric infrastructures. Windsor had responded to Governor Jerry Brown’s commitment to eliminate carbon emissions including those from natural gas in California by the year 2045. This is a blow to the town council, which has acknowledged that defending their policy could cost thousands of dollars in taxpayers’ money.
