Duval County, located in northeastern Florida, is home to about 865,000 people. Duval County was named after William Pope DuVal, who served as Florida’s governor from 1822-1834. Duval County currently is the location for a number of institutions of higher learning, including Trinity Baptist College, the University of North Florida, and Jacksonville University.
In the News: Recently, Duval County resident Andrew Flaherty filed a legal claim against the Duval County Tax Collector’s Office for issuing him a state identification card with a serious error on it. When Mr. Flaherty obtained his state identification card shortly after moving to Jacksonville, it contained seven numerical digits that were located on the bottom right. These numbers on a Florida state id serve as a way for police and other members of the public to identify people as registered sex offenders. However, Mr. Flaherty is not a sex offender and it was humiliating for him to have even his own family members think that he was a registered sex offender. Thus, Mr. Flaherty sued the Duval County Tax Collector’s Office for defamation.
