North Port is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Located in Sarasota County, Florida, it contained a population of approximately 23,000 in 2000, and has grown to over 54,000 by 2007.
In February 2010, a North Port resident was charged with multiple felony counts of threatening public servants, extortion, and intimidation by a written threat to kill or injure. Christopher Sheen, angry over losing his driver’s license due to unpaid fines, penned a letter to the Saratoga DMV office threatening state workers with a “day of reckoning.” Sheen demanded reinstatement of his driving privileges as well as $200 in compensation for his “aggravation, pain and suffering.” The letter also stated the office had seven days to comply, with a warning to be “careful who you test.” Sheehan admitted to police that he wrote the letter but claimed he was frustrated and wrote the letter as a way to resolve the license issue. The case is still pending.
Sheen’s case, as are all felonies committed within Sarasota County, is presided over by the
12th Judicial Circuit Court. The court also adjudicates probate, juvenile delinquency, family matters, and civil claims over $15,000. Misdemeanors, traffic violations, and civil cases up to $15,000 are adjudicated by the
Sarasota County Court. Both courts are located in the city of Sarasota.
