In the News: The family of an inmate filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Gwinnett County and its Sheriff’s Department because the inmate became ill while being held in jail and eventually died while awaiting transfer from one facility to another. The lawsuit alleges that while awaiting his court appearance, the man complained of abdominal pain to the Gwinnett County officials. A doctor subsequently ordered the man to be sent to the ER. This order was allegedly ignored by a deputy sheriff, who instead ordered the man to be sent to another county. The inmate died two hours later while awaiting transfer from Gwinnett County.
