Ann Arbor was named for the city’s many trees as well as the spouses of the city’s founders. Ann Arbor is home to about 114,000 people, making it Michigan’s seventh-largest city. The world-renowned University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, and its students, along with those from a few private universities, make up an impressive 32% of the city’s population. The University has greatly shaped Ann Arbor’s culture, landscape, and economy.   Ann Arbor residents enjoy easy access to many sporting facilities and parks, including the Veteran’s Memorial Ice Arena and Nichols Arboretum. Given these resources, it’s no surprise that in 2008, AARP named Ann Arbor the “healthiest city is the U.S.”
