Kent is the largest city in Portage County, Ohio. As of 2008 it has an estimated population of just under 28,000.
Prior to the 1870s, Kent was a small village known as Franklin Mills. In 1868, a businessman named Marvin Kent helped bring a major railroad through the area, which created an economic boom in the town, and resulted in the name being changed to Kent.
In the late 1800s, Kent opened the first public library in Ohio, being the first municipality to make use of a new state law allowing municipalities with over 2,000 residents to levy taxes for the purpose of maintaining a public library.
Kent is currently perhaps best known as the home of Kent State University.
Like many college towns, Kent has a large number of DUI attorneys. This says nothing negative about the town itself, of course – it’s just a commentary on the habits of college students.
